Mario Games io
We adore Super Mario for many reasons, but the original game's four-level structure and the following games' expansive environments filled with secrets just don't work here. Historically, mario games have served as showcases for new hardware, or at the absolute least, as opportunities to experiment with and test out new sets of powers or abilities. Maker is its own monster, and I'll admit that courses that attempt to replicate Super Mario's moves are the least engaging. What we ought to be embracing are the novel ideas presented in Maker.
A scary level based on the WarioWare series' tween witch Ashley pleased me during a 100 Mario Challenge. It uses the Mario series' lexicon to tell its own story, adding a new level that wouldn't have been there if the game's original intent had been to let players make more conventional Super Mario adventures. Simultaneously, and I know this is completely against the creator's design, but this level drove home for me how the 100 Mario Challenge is more akin to Wario's wild microgames than the main platforming series.
